Abel Makkonen Tesfaye (born February 16, 1990) is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and record producer better known as the Weeknd.

His music explores escapism, romance, and melancholia, and is typically influenced by personal experiences. He is known for his sonic variety and gloomy poetry. He has won four Grammy Awards, one Latin Grammy Award, 20 Billboard Music Awards, 17 Juno Awards, six American Music Awards, and two MTV Video Music Awards, and has been nominated for an Academy Award and a Primetime Emmy Award.

Tesfaye, who was born and raised in Toronto, began his career in 2009 by surreptitiously posting music on YouTube.

He co-founded the XO record label two years later and released the mixtapes House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence, which received acclaim for his style of modern and alternative R&B and the mystery surrounding his identity. He joined Republic Records in 2012 and reissued the mixtapes in the compilation CD Trilogy. In his debut studio album Kiss Land (2013), which debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200, he explored dark wave. Tesfaye began contributing to film soundtracks shortly after its release, with his acclaimed tune “Earned It” from Fifty Shades of Grey (2015) earning the Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance and being nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
